Histopathology of ameloblastoma of the jaws; some critical observations based on a 40 years single institution experience
2011
The aim of the present study is to examine all cases of intraosseous benign ameloblastomas treated between 1970 and 2010 in a single institution and to look for a possible correlation between the histopathological aspects and the demographical and clinical parameters, as well as the treatment outcome. The data of a total number of 44 patients were retrieved from the records. Nine patients were excluded because of doubt about the correct diagnosis (8 patients) or because of an extra-osseous presentation (1 patient). No statistically significant differences were found between the histopathological (sub)types of ameloblastomas and the demographical and clinical parameters, nor between the hist…

Cryobiopsy as a New Tool for Complications Diagnosis During Follow-up After Lung Transplantation: Single Institution Case Series
2020
ABSTRACT Background The first description of performing a new diagnostic procedure, cryobiopsy, in lung transplant recipients in Poland. Methods Three cases of patients after lung transplantation were analyzed in context of the procedure of cryobiopsy, which was performed in a hybrid room with a bronchoscopic video track and C-arm radiograph. Patients were subjected to complete anesthesia and intubated. Two or three sections with an average diameter of 5 mm were collected. Results The sections were large and fully diagnostic. In all 3 described cases they brought a decisive element into diagnosis. Conclusions Cryobiopsy is a useful tool in the differential diagnosis of lesions and complicat…
Retroperitoneal neuroblastomas - a single institution experience in 90 patients
2007
Purpose Nowadays neuroblastomas are detected incidentally by ultrasound in early stages. Primary surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy are treatment options. However, the approach in babies is controversial. A surveillance strategy is propagated by some groups. In this retrospective study, we evaluated age and stage at diagnosis, therapy and outcome of patients treated at our institutions since 1970. Material and methods 90 patients with retroperitoneal neuroblastomas were treated. They were divided into 2 groups according to age at time of diagnosis: 1 year. Results 40 patients were 1 year (1- 18 years). Detection of an asymptomatic tumour: 1 year 10%. Tumor stage at diagnosis > 1 y…
Vacuum-Assisted Abdominal Closure in Surgical Emergency: A Single Institution Experience Treating a Cohort with a Prevalence of Faecal Peritonitis
2021
Abstract Vacuum-assisted abdominal closure (VAAC) has evolved as a promising method for treatment of emergent surgical patients. The aim of the study was an assessment of the complication rate and outcomes following routine application of VAAC in a cohort of patients suffering predominantly with peritonitis of the lower gastrointestinal tract (GIT) origin. The prospectively collected data was analysed retrospectively, including demographic data, aetiological factors, comorbid conditions and severity of the disease. The indications for VAAC included complicated intra-abdominal infection, purulent peritonitis with sepsis and/or risk of increased intra-abdominal pressure. In total, 130 patient…
Quality Improvement Project to Evaluate Discharge Prescriptions in Children With Cystic Fibrosis
2019
Introduction: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) requires multiple pharmaceutical treatments, elevating the risk of medication errors (ME), which may compromise patient safety. This study aimed to improve the quality of discharge prescriptions (DPs) using indicators following admissions for IV antibiotics in pediatric CF patients. Methods: This project involved a longitudinal observational retrospective descriptive study followed by a longitudinal quasi-experimental prospective phase between January 2013 and December 2016 in CF patients admitted to a London Children's Hospital. The CF pharmacist reviewed DPs. Six rights of medication administration were defined (6R): dose, drug, frequency, duration of tr…
